Professor L. KANNAN,
born on the 10th of June, 1946 at Vetriyur
village in Sivagangai district of Tamil Nadu,
is having a good academic record right from UG to PG, securing I class
always and University 1 Rank in M.Sc. In research, he has earned D.Sc.
Degree in addition to Ph.D. He has put in a total of 36 years of teaching
and 30 years of research experience in different colleges and universities.
During this period, he has successfully guided 27 Ph.D. and 14 M.Phil
candidates and many M.Sc. students. He has also published more than 125
research articles in reputed national and international journals and
co-authored 8 books. He has served as member on the editorial board of
scientific journals, in addition to serving as a reviewer of articles for
many journals. So far, he has participated in 100 national and 39
international meetings for presenting papers, chairing sessions etc. and has
organized 23 seminars/conferences in various capacities. He has also
delivered lectures numbering about 125 on invitation, in different national
and international institutions on various topics. With regard to research
projects, he has successfully carried out 20 programmes for about Rs.2.3
crores on varied aspects of Marine Biology, including Coastal water quality
assessment, resource assessment through remote sensing and tsunami impact
assessment in the Palk Bay and Andaman and Nicobar islands.
Dr. Kannan has won
state and national awards and medals viz. Pulaney Andy Gold Medal, Tamil
Nadu Government Dr.Grusamy Mudaliar Environmental Protection Award, National
Environmental Science Academy Award, INSA- the Royal Netherlands Academy of
Arts and Science Exchange of Scientists Programme Award, Achievement Award
and Scroll of Honour-2006.
For discussion, exchange of views and training, collaborative
research and as an expert, he has visited different academic and research
institutions in Norway, Holland, France, Japan, Sri Lanka, U.S.A., Canada,
Australia, U.K., Singapore, Malaysia and Kenya and gained rich experience.
As a member in
several national committees, he could play a key role in the formulation and
implementation of conservation and management plans and policies of the
country. He has also coordinated the east coast eco-region programme for the
preparation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan of India
and developed the strategy and action plan for implementation in the east
coast ecoregion. Considering his expertise in the coastal and marine
biodiversity research and related national policies, he was nominated by the
Government of India to participate as an Indian delegate in the 7th
Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological
Diversity, held in Malaysia during 2004. Subsequently, he was nominated by
the Government of India to represent the country in the meetings of the
Group of Like-minded Megadiverse Countries (LMMCS) held at New Delhi during
2005. Thus, he has played a key role in the management process as well as
policy formulation at the local, national, regional and global levels. As a
member of the National Biodiversity Authority, he has been involved in
formulating and monitoring various biodiversity related activities of the
country.
He was also
nominated by the Government of India and selected by the CBD Secretariat,
Canada as a Member in the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on implementation of
Integrated Marine and Coastal Area Management (IMCAM). Then, he was invited
by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Canada as an Expert Member to
participate in the International Marine Ecological Experts’ Workshop to
review and assess the science-based ecological and biological criteria for
setting up of Marine Protected Areas beyond nation’s jurisdiction. Recently,
he has been nominated as a member to the State Council for Higher Education
by the Tamil Nadu Government. The Ministry of Environment and Forests,
Government of India has nominated him as a member of the Consultative Group
to advise the Government on matters relating to biodiversity conservation.
He has built up
good rapport with UGC, DST, DBT, DOD, MoEn&F, ICAR, UNESCO, IUCN and
other
leading institutions in India and abroad.
He possesses
good administrative experience as he has served as Director of the Centre of
Advanced Study in Marine Biology of Annamalai University during 1998-2000
and as Director, Research of Annamalai University during 2000-2006.
